Highway Safety Is Here!

A Paradigm Shift

June 1999 --

Multiple programs have been implemented over the years to reduce highway accidents, injuries and deaths. A major effort was undertaken in the 1980s to reduce the annual 50,000 accidents at highway construction and repair sites. It added message boards, portable flasher systems, more cones and other equipment to accomplish this goal. The result was only an insignificant reduction in the accident rate. We learned from this that significant highway safety improvement would only be accomplished if drivers were alerted from inside their vehicles rather than relying upon outside warnings.

An exciting new system is now available that does exactly what is required; it warns drivers inside their vehicles of approaching hazards. It is the new Safety Warning System® (SWS®) that was approved in 1999. Development addressed multiple requirements including ease of installation, specific messages warning of practically all hazards that contribute to accidents and fatalities, and cost goals that justify the investment. The results are fantastic. SWS® receivers range from less than $100 for a basic unit to slightly more than $200 for receivers with alert plus both voice warning and message display. The high-end units communicate the type of hazard you are approaching and then the specific hazard to look for. Transmitters are available in a city version with about a one-half mile range and a highway version with a 2-mile range.

Schools can protect students during their transportation by warning drivers that the bus is stopped and loading or unloading students; the time when over 75% of student fatalities occur. Transmitters will alert drivers that children are present and the school zone speed limit is enforced, answering the question in the minds of most drivers when approaching a school. Utility companies can protect their work crews and the public for about one day’s wages. Highway transmitters will communicate to drivers multiple hazard conditions such as congestion, accident site(s), delays, road conditions and general information. You will be alerted to emergency vehicles, slow moving vehicles, police vehicles in pursuit, oversize vehicles, train approaching the crossing, and other critical situations. A great application is transmitters in new vehicles, which activate if the vehicle is in an accident and the air bags deploy. It instantaneously warns other drivers of the accident and a huge reduction in "chain reaction" collisions will be achieved.

We’ve all been newly licensed drivers. We've all picked up our friends and gone cruising. Distractions both inside and outside the vehicle are enormous and providing a SWS® receiver to a teenage driver seems an excellent method to get through these distractions and minimize the possibility of receiving that late night call.

The public is supporting SWS® with over 20 million compatible receivers already purchased and in use on our highways. Now it is time for industry, government, schools, and others to incorporate SWS® and make all our lives safer
